Benefits of the DAAD Helmut Schmidt Scholarship Program 2024:
• Academic education in one of the master’s courses, listed below and selected by the DAAD, will take place from September/October 2024 with an international focus and mainly offered in English.
• Scholarship holders will benefit from accompanying support services provided by the programme coordinators at the respective study locations throughout their studies.
• Scholarship holders will have access to events and seminars organised specifically for them, as well as close exchange with other international scholarship holders.
• Participation in interdisciplinary networking events is also planned for scholarship holders.
• Scholarship holders are exempted from paying tuition fees.
• Scholarship holders will receive scholarships of currently € 934 per month for master’s courses at German higher education institutions, health insurance cover in Germany, appropriate travel allowances for travel between Germany and the respective developing and emerging countries, a study and research grant, rent subsidies and family supplements as applicable.
• Scholarship holders for the “Social Protection” master’s course will receive a sur-place rate of €500 per month in the 4th semester (mandatory online semester in the student’s country of origin or another developing/emerging country).
• A preceding German language course in Germany, lasting up to 6 months, is mandatory for all scholarship holders.

What is the Selection Criteria for the DAAD Helmut-Schmidt Programme?
The selection process for the DAAD Helmut-Schmidt Programme is highly competitive and requires meeting the following important selection criteria:
• Conclusive account of academic, professional, and personal motivation for pursuing master’s studies in Germany and choosing and prioritizing the master’s courses.
• Practical experience relevant to the programme, including professional experience, internships, political activities or service to the community, such as volunteering or working for charities or NGOs.
• Completion of the first higher education degree with above-average grades (upper third).
• Motivation that aligns with the goals of the Helmut Schmidt Programme.
Formal requirements:
• Candidates who already hold a master’s degree should provide a well-argued case as to why they should be funded for another postgraduate degree.
• The candidates’ last university degree should not date back more than six years (date of issue not before 1 January 2017).
• Candidates who have spent more than the past 15 months in a country not listed on the DAC list are not eligible.
